Gooseberry variety Emerald, description and photo

The second name of this variety is Ural Emerald. The culture was bred by crossing two frost-resistant gooseberry species, Nugget and Pervenets Minusinsk in Chelyabinsk.

The variety is intended for planting in Siberia and in the West of Russia, since the bush calmly tolerates an unfavorable climate (frost resistance up to minus thirty-five degrees). It tolerates prolonged drought worse, but this problem can be easily solved by regular watering.

Detailed description:

  • Early variety, dark green. Differs in fast reproduction and high fruiting.
  • The bushes are medium spreading, of medium height, side shoots grow in large numbers, so regular pruning is carried out.
  • There are a large number of thorns. Gloves are recommended when harvesting.
  • The fruits are large, round, sometimes oval. The color is dark green.
  • The taste is sweet, there is a slight sourness. Can be consumed neat or made for the winter with jams and preserves.

The berry is healthy, it contains a number of vitamins, organic acids and a minimum amount of sugar. With sufficient consumption of gooseberries, radionuclides are excreted from the body.

Let's watch an interesting video about the Emerald gooseberry variety, its features and yield:

General characteristics, yield

Let's watch the video and use tips for caring for the plant and pruning it:

Manipulation is necessary to eliminate thickening and to increase yields.

After seven to eight years old branches are cut. There should be a minimum of eight, a maximum of twenty branches. It is also recommended, starting from this age, to cut off several new shoots every year.

If the bush thickens quickly, the procedure should be started in the fourth or fifth year of the plant's life.

Over time, the bush is completely renewed and the yield is maintained.

Do gooseberry pollinators need Ural emerald

Gooseberry Emerald does not need pollination. Flowers are bisexual, pollination happens by itself.

Diseases and pests, prevention

In rare cases, it is possible to become infected with anthracnose, septoria and attack by a goldfish, aphids or spider mites.

To avoid this, prevention is carried out. Spraying should be carried out in early spring and late autumn. To prepare the solution, you need: 10 liters of water and one hundred and fifty grams of copper sulfate.

You can buy a ready-made product: Ridomil, Mospilan or Aktara.

It is necessary to remove weeds around the bushes, which are the shelter of insects.
It is recommended to dig up the ground, sprinkling it with ash. Burn the fallen leaves.
