Unpretentiousness, the ability to actively saturate the air with oxygen, an abundance of varieties (more than 900), did not leave the ficus without the attention of indoor plant lovers. Due to its qualities, ficus is often found in office premises.

To breed or not to breed?

Studies have shown that a member of the mulberry family is able to convert toxic substances in the air into sugar and amino acids. Oriental medicine uses ficus for its own purposes: the treatment of intestines, skin and cancer diseases. Self-treatment is not worth it, ficus juice is poisonous.

Asthmatics should refrain from breeding this plant due to the release of rubber from the flower. According to one of the signs, ficus contributes to the appearance of a child if it is placed in the bedroom. This is due to the ability to produce substances that help in the treatment of female diseases. In addition, the ficus in the bedroom purifies the air, which improves sleep.

Reproduction of ficus: when and how

Indoor ficus does not bloom, therefore it reproduces vegetatively. April and May are the most favorable time for this, since plants take root during this period most actively. Flowers love warmth, but not direct sunlight. Three ways to reproduce ficuses:

  • Cuttings
  • Layers
  • Leaflet

Ficus Benjamin. To promote better rooting of the new plant, the day before cutting the cuttings, the ficus is watered abundantly. This will help in the future to take root better. An upper or lateral shoot 10-15 cm long is selected for this. The cut angle is approximately 45 degrees.

It is best to use a sharp blade, so as not to damage the plant tissue, and not slow down the process of root emergence. As soon as the cutting is cut, it is placed in water, because the ficus on the cut secretes milky juice to heal the lesions and must be washed off. The base of the cut can be cut.

A young shoot is cut across, woody - crosswise. After 2-4 weeks, roots appear and the cutting can be planted in the ground. Can be planted immediately after cutting. In this case, the cut must be rinsed and dried. But it is impossible to control the appearance of roots or their possible decay.

The same manipulations are done with lyre ficus, but by placing a stalk in the water, you can add activated or charcoal. The lower leaves should not be in water. The roots appear after a month. For better rooting, ficus can be created with a greenhouse effect. The rubbery ficus can branch or elongate. In the second option, the top is cut off by analogy with the previous options.

The stalk is planted directly into the ground. Before that, the washed cut is sprinkled with charcoal. A greenhouse should be created above the handle (cover with a jar). When the flower has grown large enough, it is worth propagating by layers. Firstly, this method is suitable for old plants, cuttings of which do not give roots. Secondly, it will help the flower acquire a more decorative look.

With a sharp knife, an incision is made at an angle from the bottom of the selected branch. A match is inserted into the incision and the milky juice is wiped off.

A bag is formed from polyethylene at the incision site. This bag will hold sphagnum moss (wet moss). This is done to prevent decay of the plant. A month later, roots appear at the incision site. It is necessary to remove the package from the plant no earlier than two to three months after the formation of the roots. Then the shoot is cut off and planted in the ground.

It is important to maintain high humidity at first. Reproduction by a sheet. In fact, this is the same propagation by cuttings, but the cut is made without indentation from the internode, but right along it, so that a piece of it remains. If you just cut off a leaf, then it can put down roots, but a full-fledged plant will not work out of it.

Necessary care

Ficuses do not like direct sunlight. But with insufficient light, the plant grows upward and fewer leaves grow on it. Doesn't like draft. Loves daily spraying with warm water. If possible, you can wash in the shower. The abundance of watering does not change much with the season. During the period of growth or in the heat, it is better to slightly increase the watering, in the fall - to reduce.

Water with lukewarm, settled water. Ficus needs pruning to form a crown. This increases branching, and buds awaken. Pruning should be done annually for the shape. The top of the plant is trimmed once in its entire life. Pruning of lateral branches, once every couple of years. A week and a half after pruning, you need to fertilize the flower. The cut point is dipped with a soft cloth.

Planting and transplanting

The pot is matched to a size slightly larger than the size of the roots. Do not buy a pot that is too spacious. It will be difficult for a ficus to grow in it. The root system of the flower is prone to rotting, due to high humidity, so you need to take care of good drainage.

For this, chipped bricks or small stones are suitable. Birch charcoal will help prevent the process of root rotting in the soil. For planting and transplanting, the best time is spring, but after buying a flower, the transplant should be done immediately. The soil for ficus is formed from the ratio of two parts of leafy land, and one part of peat and humus. Or, instead of humus, sod earth and sand are added.

Everything is mixed in equal parts. A ficus transplant requires a year or two later, subject to a properly selected pot. An adult ficus is transplanted no more often than after 5 years. The top layer of the earth is replaced annually. If a white coating of salt appears, then you can change the layer earlier. Proper care of the ficus tree will ensure a long life for a green pet. And its owner is not only a beautiful ornamental plant, but also benefits.
