Description of the plant

Clematis is a shrub vine with a height of more than 2 meters. The antennae are located on the leaves, thanks to which the plant grows on a support. Leaves are opposite, trifoliate, oval green.

The Nelly Moser variety has star-shaped flowers with a diameter of about 18 cm and a purple to light pink hue. One flower has from 4 to 8 petals. On the petals bright purple stripes. Flowers first appear on last year's shoots, and then on new ones.

Flowering begins in early summer and lasts until the first frost. Re-flowering may occur. Clematis grows in sunny and dark areas. The root system of the plant is quite sensitive to high temperatures. For this reason, it is important when planting that the neck is in the shade. Clematis is good for growing near fences, trellises, gazebos or other supports.

Cultivation of clematis: soil preparation and planting

Clematis prefers loose, loamy and fertile soils. The soil must be neutral. In windy areas, shoots break and get confused, and flowers are often damaged. It is not recommended to plant the plant in lowlands, in wet and wetlands. The plant will not grow in moist, clayey, and acidic soils.

Planting clematis with open roots is carried out in spring or autumn. Immediately before planting, a 60x60 cm hole should be dug. Then a layer of expanded clay 10 cm should be laid on the bottom, and then covered with fertile soil. Compost, peat, sand and wood ash are used as substrates.

It is also necessary to add 10 g of superphosphate and about 200 g of lime to the soil. Mix everything thoroughly. The roots of the plant are first immersed in cool water for 1.5-2 hours, and then gently spread and deepened into the soil by 10 cm. After that, pour water.

It is imperative to plant clematis near the support. Its height should be about 3 meters. It is undesirable to land close to a wall, fence or other support. The distance from the support to the plants should be about 10-15 cm. When planting clematis next to other plants, a distance of 1 meter must be observed.

Clematis care

The vine should be watered in a timely manner and abundantly. It is important to avoid stagnant moisture. Watering is carried out once a week, and in a drought at least 2-3 times. It is recommended to fertilize the plant once a month and a half, while alternating mineral complexes with organic fertilizers.

Pruning clematis will help shape the beautiful outline and splendor of the plant. This requires:

  1. The first time clematis is cut off when planting. In the summer, the shoots that are formed from the lower buds are pinched. The plant is then pruned regularly.
  2. For lush flowering all summer, in the spring, part of its shoots is cut off.

In late autumn, the plant should be prepared for winter. It is cut, cleaned and covered with boards or other objects with the first frost. With proper cover, the plant can tolerate frosts up to 45 degrees. The great danger for clematis is not frost, but waterlogging of the soil.

In the spring, the plant is pinched, the shoots are cut off and, if necessary, transplanted at a distance of 0.5 meters from each other.

Breeding features

Clematis can be propagated in several ways:

  • Cuttings
  • Layers
  • Seeds
  • By dividing the bush

When the buds begin to set, propagation by cuttings can be carried out. To do this, cut and divide the shoots into parts, while the lower cut should be oblique. The segments must have one node each. The leaves are cut in half. Prepared cuttings are planted in a substrate and placed in a warm place.

They need to be watered regularly. After the cuttings have taken root, they are planted in a greenhouse along with a pot. The shoots are planted in a permanent place after a year. Reproduction by layering is carried out as follows: the bush is spud so that 2-3 ovaries are underground. After a couple of years, a root system will begin to form in place of the leaves.

After that, the shoots with the new roots formed are cut off. There is another way of propagation by layering: dig a small groove near the liana bush and lay a couple of shoots. Then sprinkle with peat and earth, and cover with dry foliage on top.

The seed propagation method of the plant is used only for small-flowered varieties, the rest of the species can be bred by the methods listed above. Seeds can be harvested on their own: small-seeded varieties produce seeds in 1-2 months, and large-seeded varieties - in 2-3 months.

Sowing seeds is performed in open ground with the onset of warm, stable weather. Seedlings will appear in 1.5-2 months. First, the seeds must be soaked in warm water for 3 days. To improve germination, it can be treated with special agents. The division of the bush can be carried out on young plants.

The bush needs to be dug up, the roots shaken off the ground and divided with pruning shears into several parts. It should be divided in such a way that enough roots and shoots with buds remain on one division. Before planting, the roots of the plant are recommended to be treated with potassium permanganate. When choosing a breeding method for clematis, the variety of the plant, as well as its age and condition, should be taken into account.
